Dhangadhi Premier League gets sensational start

The third edition of the Ruslan Dhangadhi Premier League got off to a rollicking start after both the opening day matches produced a thrilling climax as Fapla Cricket Ground made its debut in Nepali domestic cricket.

In the first match, United Arab Emirates skipper Rohan Mustafa almost pulled out two-time defending champions Dhangadhi Stars from the jaws defeat only to be denied by cool nerves from Mehboob Alam and Bikram Bhushal in a four-wicket defeat from the hands of Kathmandu Goldens.

Later in the day, Rupandehi Challengers won the match in the last 10 balls denying Mahendranagar United a victory with a slim two-run win. The second match was a spectacle as both teams had similar fate with only end result separating the two teams.

Challengers were 68-6 in 14 overs then Sumit Maharjan and a cameo from Bikram Sob guided them to 111 all out in 20 overs. In an identical display, United were reeling at 66-6 by the 16th overs before Rohit Kumar Paudel took them close to victory and Bikram Sob bowled a crucial 19th over with Krishna Karki effectively ending their hopes restricting the opponents to 109-8.

With Rohit’s resurgence, United needed 21 runs to win from the last two overs and it got worse when Bikram bowled a no ball in the second delivery to conceded three runs from first ball. Rohit struck Bikram for a six in the free hit as United needed 12 from 10 balls.

Bikram then bowled Rohit and bowled four consecutive dots leaving United with 10 to get from six. Krishna bowled Mohammad Naveed (12) in the first ball of the last over and conceded just nine runs handing Challengers a thrilling victory. Rohit made 24 off 21, while Subramanian Ananda struck two sixes in a 34-ball 25.

Man of the match Bikram took 3-24 from three overs and Puneet Mehra was economical in his 2-13 from four overs.

Sumit top scored for Challengers making a 35-ball 27 with two sixes and a four. Binod Bhandari also struck two sixes and a four in his 16-ball 19. Sob hit a six and a four in his 10-ball 16.

In the first match, Amit Shrestha scored a half century as Stars recovered early wobble to post 132-5 in 20 overs. The first three United batsmen of contributed laying the foundation for what could have been an easy chase. But Mustafa made sure it was not going to be easy for them until Mehboob and Bhushal grounded out the victory in the penultimate ball.

United needed 29 runs in the last three overs with four wickets in hand but Bhushal and Mehboob negotiated well beginning with 12 runs from the 18th bowled by Pawan Sarraf. Bhushal (14 not out) had hit Pawan for a six and clobbered another maximum in the 19th over from Sompal Kami to collect nine runs.

Amir Hayat did bowl well in the last over conceding four runs in the first four balls. But Mehboob (10 not out) hit the winning boundary in the fifth.

Ankit Dabas, who got involved in a crucial 57-run stand for the second wicket with Anil Sah (24), made 29 off 23 with two sixes and two fours. Opener Gaurav Tomar notched up 28 off 24 with three fours and two sixes. Mustafa took 4-27 from four overs for Stars.
