Dhangadhi Premier League pushed until Monday

Feb 09, 2019 | CN Staff |

The Dhangadhi Premier League has been postponed until Monday after consistent rain brought by westerly winds made the Fapla Cricket Ground unplayable.

Dhangadhi Stars were scheduled to take on Biratnagar Kings in the tournament opener on Saturday but Wednesday’s continuous rain forced the rescheduling of the tournament. Organisers Dhangadhi Cricket Academy (DCA) decided to push the date after a round of discussion with franchise owners and captains.

The tournament will now begin from Monday with two matches scheduled for the opener. Two-time defending champions Stars will take on Kathmandu Goldens, while Rupandehi Challengers will be up against Mahendranagar United.

“We had a chat with franchise owners and captains on Friday evening and decided to push the dates. One rest day has been chopped off while if more rain interruption occurs, the teams scheduled to play that day will share the points. The rest day will no more be chopped off,” said Tournament Director Binod Das.

A total of six franchises are participating in the 15-day tournament with the champions receiving a cash purse of Rs 3 million – the highest in domestic cricket tournament history.

Fapla, which has been proposed as an international standard stadium by the cricket enthusiasts of the city, is hosting the tournament for the first time. The first two editions were held at the SP grounds. DCA President Subash Shahi said organizing the tournament in Fapla is all about forcing the stakeholders and government to ponder on making Fapla an international stadium.
