Jan 28, 2019 | CN Staff |

Skipper Paras Khadka struck magnificent century and youngsters held their firm as Nepal claimed their first ODI Series victory defeating the United Arab Emirates by four wickets at the ICC Academy Oval in Dubai on Monday.

A century stand between Shaiman Anwar and CP Rizwan was backed by Mohammad Boota’s brutal hitting as UAE recovered from early setbacks to reach 254-6 in 50 overs.

Paras gave a good counter punch with countries first every century in the One Day Internationals as the visitors reached 255-6 in 44.4 overs for a first series victory.

Nepal’s plan with the chase revolved around Paras once he found his touch and regained his usual touch once opener Binod Bhandari (nine) was dismissed in the fifth over. Paras scored 109 ball-115 hitting 15 fours and a six. He shared 62 runs for the second wicket with vice-captain Gyanendra Malla (31) to keep Nepal in the chase.

Nepal lost Gyanendra, who hit four boundaries in 35 deliveries, Dipendra Singh Airee (six) and Sandeep Jora (19) to be at 129-4 before young Rohit Kumar Paudel gave him a good support.

Paras and Rohit added 54 runs for the fifth wicket and another 32 runs with Aarif Sheikh inched Nepal closer. UAE heave a sigh of relief after Qadeer Ahmed trapped Paras leg before wicket but Sompal Kami and Aarif made sure the team would not struggle this time.

Sompal and Aarif (21) shared 40 runs for the seventh wicket sailing the team home. Sompal, who hit the winning six, was unbeaten on 26 off 25 with three fours. Imran Haider and Ahmed took two wickets each for UAE.

Earlier, Nepal’s pace bowling duo of Sompal and Karan made life difficult for UAE’s top order with nagging outside-off line. They reduced UAE to 14-2 in 10 overs with a wicket each.

Despite the horrible start, Anwar and Rizwan century stand helped the host to recover. UAE added 154 runs in the last 16 overs and gave a fair chance to their bowlers.

Anwar scored 87 runs from 70 balls hitting nine fours and two sixes. Rizwan anchored the innings with a 76-ball 45 with five hits to the fence. Boota played blistering innings and scored unbeaten 59 runs from 31 balls with five fours and four sixes. He was main reason for UAE’s 56 runs in last three overs.

Karan and Paras picked up two wickets each for winning side. Player-of-the-match Paras returned the figures of 2-44 in his 10 overs of bowling spell. Karan ended with the figures of 2-46 in his 10. Sompal and Sandeep Lamichhane also took a wicket each.
