Jan 01, 2019 | CN Staff |

Sompal Kami had a terrible Everest Premier League Twenty20 campaign after he had to sit out of last four games of his franchise in the tournament due to an ankle injury. His selection for the Nepal's upcoming bilateral ODI and Twenty20 series against UAE was in jeopardy but the fast bowling all rounder has managed to final place in the 20-member preliminary squad which was announced on Monday. Sompal will now face a race against time to prove his fitness for the UAE Series which begins with the one-dayers from January 25.

Nepal will have an upper hand for the series as the Emiratis are without their regular skipper Rohan Mustafa, Ahmed Raza and

Rameez Shahzad who are currenty in suspendsion under disciplinary grounds. suspension of UAE’s regular captain Rohan Mustafa

including Ahmed Raza and Rameez Shahzad.

Keeping the Everest Premier League and UAE series in perspective, Roshan  Dhital caught up with Sompal for a round of

interview. Excerpts:

Q. How are you personally preparing for upcoming series against the UAE?

A. UAE is a tough opponent to compete against but we are very familiar with their strengths and weakness. I’m personally working on my fitness as well as basics. I love playing against them and very determined to perform well this time as well.

Q. Are you working on any specific areas?

A. As I said earlier, I’m focusing on my fitness as well as basics. But beside that, I’m working on my yorkers which I think is very important aspect of fast bowling in modern cricket.

Q. Have you completely recovered from the ankle injury? How is it now?

A. Yes, it is good. Fortunately, I am recovering well. I worked a lot on it and still working as fitness is very important to take the best out of you. It is very tough to comeback after injury but I’m doing every bit of things to make myself fit against the UAE. Hopefully, I will contribute and make the nation proud.

Q. How are you taking this series? What do you think about Nepal’s chances?

A. It always gives you an immense amount of pride when you play for your country. I always want to become better than what I was yesterday. It's a new year for us and we want to start it on a high-note. It was a dream to play ODI match and currently we are realising our dream but we don’t want to confine ourselves here.

We are taking this as an opportunity to leave a new mark with series victory. Talking about Nepal’s chances, I think we have very good chance to get the things done as they (UAE) will miss the services of Rohan Mustafa along with other two and Adnan Mufti is now retired.

Q. How do you rate overall season of recently concluded Everest Premier League? How was the mood in dressing room with well-reputed international stars?

A. It was a good experience playing along with some of the star players of cricket world. I enjoyed and got to share lot of things with them. But at the same time, I was unfortunate to miss majority of matches due to injury. All the players were excited and I reckon all the international recruits also had a great time here in Nepal.

Q. Being a premium fast bowler of the national cricket team, how do you feel when young medium pacers like Rashid Khan, Avinash Bohora emerge and perform well ? What should be your role to inspire more youngsters to become pace bowlers?

A. Honestly speaking, I feel very good to see Rashid, Avi, and Kishor (Kishor Mahato). Whenever we meet, we discuss lot about our cricket. They are very keen to learn which is a very good sign for Nepali cricket. I feel good whenever I see young kid rolling his arm very fast. I love to share my experience with them.

Q. What will be Sompal Kami’s goal for the next five years?

A. Now, our common goal is to play World Cup. We want to play 50-over World Cup which is very tough with current allocation of participating teams but we will give more than hundred percent from our side. I always want to perform well and want to contribute in team’s victories. I’m working on my consistency as I want to become Nepal’s match-winner.

Q. What message would you like to convey your fans and well-wishers through our website?

A. Thank you everyone for always being there in my good as well as bad times. I appreciate all of your love and support for Nepali cricket and I assure you that we will do our best to make you proud and happy. Thank you once again, stay healthy and fit everyone CHEERS.
