Pradeep returns after three years, Sharad back

Sep 30, 2018 | CN Staff |

Pradeep Airee returned to national team after three years and Sharad Vesawkar recovered on time to join Nepal for the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers Asia (Eastern Region) final squad on Sunday.

One of the cricketers to be tested in different batting positions, Pradeep had been out of the national team after he played in the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) match against Scotland on July 31, 2015 in Ayr.

His last Twenty20 for Nepal was the 2015 ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers match against Jersey on July 18. But the hard hitting batsman hit back to form during Prime Minister Cup One Day National cricket tournament early this year. His fine performance in the closed-camp was also one of the reasons he won his place back in the team.

Sharad missed an all-important Asia Cup Qualifiers in Malaysia early this month after he had to keep himself out of action following a finger injury he carried during Nepal’s first ever ODI Series which they had played against the Netherlands.

While fielding against the Dutch in the first match in Amstelveen on August 1, Sharad suffered a serious finger injury and even missed the second ODI. He had also come on to bat at No 11 in the first match.

There was disappointment for another returning cricketer Sagar Pun who seems to have made way for Pradeep. Sagar returned to the team after the WCLC matches against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in December before joining the team for the Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Sunil Dhamala, Dipesh Shrestha and Sahab Alam faced the axed from the 18-member preliminary squad following the closed-camp at the TU Stadium. Paras Khadka will lead the Nepali side in Malaysia against Singapore, the hosts, Bhutan, China, Myanmar and Thailand.

Gyanendra Malla, Dipendra Singh Airee, Sandeep Lamichhane, Basanta Regmi, Lalit Singh Bhandari, Lalit Narayan Rajbanshi, Sompal Kami, Aarif Sheikh, Anil Kumar Sah, Binod Bhandari and Karan KC were retained from the Asia Cup Qualifiers squad.

The Eastern Region Qualifiers is scheduled for October 3-12 and it will send three teams into the Asia Qualifiers where they will meet the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait. Only the top two teams from the Asia Qualifiers will reach the Global Qualifiers. Top six teams from the Global Qualifiers will reach the ICC World Twenty20 to be held in Australia in 2020.
