Nepal impressed with the ball but still had a sour start in their Quadrangular U-19 One Day Series losing India U-19 ‘B’ by 40 runs in Lucknow on Wednesday.

At the Ekana International Cricket Stadium ‘B’, Nepal squeezed out India for just 161 runs in 49 overs after electing to field first. But they had a poor display with the bat as the team was bundled out for just 121 runs in 41.3 overs.

A 34-run partnership between skipper Aasif Sheikh and Bhim Sharki was the only brightest spot for Nepal after the top order collapsed to 28-4 in just 16 overs. Trit Raj Das (eight), Ravi Shah (eight), Bipin Rawal (two) and Sundeep Zora (four) all fell cheaply in the top order.

Aasif made 17 from 40 balls with three boundaries before Pankaj Yadav got rid of him. Pankaj struck against to remove Bhim whose 57-ball 30 included four boundaries. Kamal Singh Airee produced a late firework hitting two sixes in a 27-ball 22 but that only helped in reducing the defeat margin.

Pankaj and Shubhang Hegde took three wickets each for the Indian side. Pawan Sarraf (12) was the only remaining Nepali batsman to make runs in double figures.

Earlier, India’s total revolved around their opener Qasim Iqbal after the man-of-the-match contributed an all-important 50 runs hitting five fours and two sixes. Risabh Chouhan (19) was their next best scorer.

For Nepal, Kamal took 3-31 from 10 overs in a spell that included two maiden. Pawan also had 2-31 from 10 overs, while Sagar Dhakal, Kishor Mahato and Samsad Alam had one scalp apiece.

Nepal will now play India U-19 ‘A’ on Friday before meeting Afghanistan U-19 on Sunday. India ‘A’ crushed Afghanistan by 140 runs in another match of the day. The top two teams after the league round will meet in the final.
