Nepal-Dutch Twenty20 clash in Lord's gets T20I status

Jun 26, 2018 | Saleena Shrestha |
Nepal's match against the Netherlands in the Twenty20 Triangular Tournament at the Lord's on July 29 has been awarded full Twenty20 International status on Tuesday.

"The IT20 between the two ICC Associate nations will be the last of three matches played on Sunday 29th July, with MCC taking on both Nepal and the Netherlands earlier in the day," a statement in Lord's official website read. "The Triangular tournament at Lord’s in July has been granted an International T20 after ICC permitted One-Day International status to Nepal after their excellent performance at the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe," it further said.

It will be Nepal's first Twenty20 International match in a year after they played Papua New Guinea in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers in Ireland and Scotland. After that tournament, Nepal had lost their Twenty20 International status which they had earned after their impressive performance in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20.

After the four-match series hosted by Netherlands on 2015 which the hosts had won 3-1, it is going to be the first T20I meeting between the two teams. It has already been confirmed that the former Sri Lanka captain, Mahela Jayawardene will lead the MCC side, and Scotland internationals Dylan Budge, Alasdair Evans and Mark Watt are among the Club’s squad.

The full MCC squad will be announced in the coming weeks, stated the website. After the one-day event at the Lord's, Nepal will then head to the Netherlands to play their first ever One Day International Series with a double header against the Dutch on August 1 and 3.
