Sri Lankan legend Jayawardene to lead MCC against Nepal

Jun 20, 2018 | Saleena Shrestha |
Sri Lankan cricket legend and former captain Mahela Jayawardene is set to lead Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in a Twenty20 Triangular Tournament with Nepal and the Netherlands.

Nepal are making their return to the iconic Lord's cricket ground -- often called the Mecca of Cricket -- on July 29. The official website of Lord’s announced on Wednesday that Jayawardene will lead MCC who will face the two ICC Associate nations.

The Twenty20 Triangular Tournament will be followed by a two-match One Day International Series between Nepal and the Netherlands. Nepal are making their ODI debut with the away matches against the Dutch on August 1 and 3

Jayawardene, one of Sri Lanka’s finest players, has played 55 Twenty20 Internationals, scoring 1,493 runs. He had retired from the Twenty20 after Sri Lanka won the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. He was the mentor of Mumbai Indians in the last edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and has also played domestic Twenty20 in England with both Somerset and Sussex.

Three Scotland players -- Dylan Budge, Alasdair Evans and Mark Watt -- will also be included in MCC squad. They all featured in Scotland’s first-ever One-Day International win against England at Edinburgh earlier this month and also played for MCC in two Twenty20 matches against the Aboriginal XI at Arundel Castle on 5th June.

The full MCC squad will be announced in the coming weeks, stated the website.
