Samsad's one-ball heroics puts Chauraha in final

Apr 10, 2018 | Saleena Shrestha |
Team Chauraha Dhangadhi needed six runs from the last two balls with one wicket left and Samsad Sheikh produced a one-ball wonder to guide his side into the final of Dhangadhi Premier League.

In the first Qualifier, Sompal Kami's Chauraha stunned Gyanendra Malla-led Kathmandu Goldens by one wicket to boast as the first finalists of the tournament. Goldens will now have another try for the final when they meet Mahendranagar United in the second Qualifier on Wednesday

At the SSP grounds, Goldens could only manage 127-9 in 20 overs. But they fought back with the ball and took the game to last over where the defending champions required 10 from six balls.

Rashid Khan bowled the first delivery wide and a fumble from wicketkeeper Bhupendra Thapa allowed Chauraha to scamper for a couple to get three runs without a legal ball bowled. A single from Shankar Rana in the second over then made it six to win from five balls.

The match turned into its head when Rashid bowled a dot in the second ball and Shankar Rana was run out in the third by Gyanendra. Rashid then got rid of Yogendra Singh Karki leaving six to win from last two balls. But Samsad did the wonder flicking Rashid fuller length ball towards the square leg, igniting wild celebration in the Chauraha camp.

Chauraha were put into backfoot as they lost wickets at regular interval. Their UAE recruit Rohan Mustafa top scored with 33 runs from 20 balls hitting two fours and a six. Shankar Rana kept Chauraha in the game holding the innings with lower order batsmen and in between Sonu Tamang hit a 10-ball 14.

Man-of-the-match Rana made 28 from 39 balls with two boundaries. Sunny Patel, Rashid and Shahab Alam took two wickets each for Goldens.

Earlier, Gyanendra was the only batsman to play with some grit making a 23-ball 38 with three boundaries and two sixes. Amit Shrestha scored 36 while sharing 52-run partnership for the third wicket with Gyanendra but the opener failed to provide the lift at right time.

Amit hit two fours and a six in his innings, while Pushpa Thapa chipped in a 14-ball 16 with two boundaries. Sompal Kami and Lalit Singh Bhandari took two wickets each for Chauraha.
