Gyanendra leads Goldens to first Qualifier

Apr 06, 2018 | Saleena Shrestha |
Gyanendra Malla continued to find form at right time handing Kathmandu Goldens a place in the first Qualifier of the Dhangadhi Premier League on Friday

The national team opener came in to bat at No 4 leading his side to a five-wicket victory over Paras Khadka's Biratnagar Kings in a last ball thriller. After Gyanendra, Pushpa Thapa and Sunny Patel kept Goldens in the game before they needed six runs in the last over bowled by Ramnaresh Giri.

Ramnaresh bowled his heart out and left every chance of a one-over eliminator conceding just five runs in the first five. Ramnaresh went for another fuller one in the final ball but Gyanendra made a perfect connection sealing the game with a six.

Kings had rode on another powerpacked display from Babar Hayat to make 164-8 in 20 overs. Gyanendra's unbeaten 68 -- his second consecutive half century in the tournament -- took Goldens to 170-5 in the last ball of the day.

Goldens were left with tough ask of 52 runs from the last 24 balls and the game turned around in the 17th bowled by Manjeet Shrestha. Pushpa hit Manjeet for a six and two fours in three consecutive deliveries and another four from Gyanendra saw him bleed 20 runs.

Basanta Regmi removed Basanta in the next over but Patel calmed nerves with a four and a six in the 18th over that saw them collect 12 runs. Patel kept the run rate on check with two sixes in the 19th over from Paras who conceded 14 runs in that over as Goldens sniffed victory.

Man-of-the-match Gyanendra hit five boundaries and four sixes with a 40-ball 68. Patel chipped in an invaluable 25 from 10 balls. Pushpa made 24 from 17. Bhupendra Thapa also scored from the top order making a 28-ball 36 with three fours and two sixes.

Earlier, it was Hayat who led Kings charge with a 33-ball 67 hitting seven sixes and three boundaries. Dilip Nath contributed with a 27-ball 33 hitting four boundaries and a six.

Lalit Rajbanshi took 3-18 from four overs. Rashid Khan also took two wickets for Goldens.
