Nepal seeks to reap benefits from ODI status

Mar 19, 2018 | Cricketingnepal |
The national cricket team on Monday returned from Zimbabwe to a warm welcome as the country seeks to reap benefits from the One Day International status they achieve following an eighth place finish in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers.

Nepal were assured of after their six-wicket victory over Papua New Guinea in the seventh place playoff semi-final combined with Hong Kong's 44-run loss to the Netherlands in other seventh place playoff game. The historic achievement has opened further opportunities for Nepal who can now play alongside the big boys of the game provided things fall into their place.

But with the country's cricket governing body suspended by the International Cricket Council and domesic structure and infrastructure in tatters, Nepal are left with a massive work to do that too in a shot time. The ODI status remains with Nepal for the next four years until a new cycle begins in 2022.

"It was a dream of us to make Nepal an ODI country. Now if we move ahead collectively including the players, coaches, cricket's stake holders and sports officials, we can lay a good foundation of Nepali cricket and ensure permanent stability," Paras told reporters at the Tribhuvan International Airport.

"Off the field, we have to make a good structure of domestic cricket at the earliers so that we can move ahead with a plan in a matter of six months or one year. In fact the government has to prioritise cricket and move ahead," the Nepali skipper added.

Nepal coach Jagat Tamatta wants Nepal to do the work to make maximum use of ODI status. "How we are going to maintain this status is the biggest question for us. We earned the Twenty20 International status in 2014 but we did nothing," said Tamatta.

"Now we have ODI status and if things don't change, it will have no meaning. We have to make better domestic structure that will included three or four-day cricket, 50-over leagues and good infrastructure. There is a huge challenge for us to maintain this status," Tamatta added.
