I consider myself lucky because Nepal didn't suffer during my bad phase: Gyanendra Malla

Feb 28, 2018 | Cricketingnepal |
National team vice-captain Gyanendra Malla had had a difficult outing in the ICC World Cricket League Division 2 in Namibia after the opening batsman managed just 79 runs from six matches. Gyanendra's failure of making runs saw Nepal struggle throughout the Division 2 where they made a lucky escape to scrape into the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe after winning three out of five league matches in last ball.
Gyanendra's biggest score in Namibia was 24 runs against the United Arab Emirates in the final where he and Dilip Nath notched up the highest opening wicket partnership of 38 runs.  Here are the excerpts:

Q. What is World Cup Qualifiers for us?
A. World Cup Qualifiers is a stage of cricket for us which determines the future of Nepali cricket. World Cup, of course, is the biggest goal for everyone of us. But setting a least target, if we manage to reach the second round (Super Six) and get ODI status, Nepali cricket will play at a higher level for the next four years. Ultimately, this will not only shape our future for the next four years but also give a good platform for the upcoming cricketers.

Q. What is the strength and weakness of the team?
A. Team spirit is the biggest strength of the team. Bowling and fielding departments have always done their job. Our batting couldn't have been that satisfying but I think we are expecting something good from the top order.

Q. What can give us ODI status?
A. Of course it's batting. The way we had performed in Division 2 or Division 3 is not going to work for us. We are into a tournament where we have to either put 250 runs on board or get ready to chase that total. It the top order, including myself, manage to give a good start then we can do good. If we put 250 runs on the board, we can challenge any team.

Q. How concerned are you with your form?
A. Everyone goes through a bad phase. I consider myself lucky because the team didn't have to suffer when I was in my bad phase. We succeeded in qualifying for this tournament (World Cup Qualifiers). Going into this tournament, I am confident that I am going to perform even better.
