Sonu Tamang became the third centurion of the Khukuri Challenger Twenty20 as he hit a magnificent 131 not out off just 59 deliveries to put Baluwatar Cricket Club in the quarter-finals of the tournament at the Mulpani Cricket Ground on Thursday.

Batting first in the Group ‘B’ match, Sonu’s whirlwind knock lifted Baluwatar to 208-4 in 20 overs as they beat Lord Buddha Cricket Club (LBCC) by 105 runs. Royal PC Fighter also followed them in the last four from the group beating Trimurty Boys by 58 runs. Both teams have nine points each from three matches but Baluwatar lead the table on net run rate.

Baluwatar were once reeling at 48-3 but Sonu stepped in and together with Prithu Baskota (26) shared a 132-run partnership. Sonu hit 12 boundaries and nine sixes. Opener Suman Uday also made 26 runs for Baluwatar. Tejendra Rajbhandari took two with Prasoon Thapa Magar and Krishan Gajurel getting one scalp apiece.

LBCC were 46-6 and a 46-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Prasoon and Anup Shrestha (24) only helped to save their blushes.  Prasoon top scored for his side with a 31-ball 32 hitting five boundaries. Shaisav KC took 3-13 from four overs for Baluwatar and man-of-the-match Sonu also took two wickets.

In the first match of the day, Naresh Chand’s half century guided PC Fighter to 182-6. Opener Himanshu Dutta pulled up a half century but Trimurty Boys can only muster 124-9. Himanshu made a 49-ball 57 with nine boundaries. Anish Lama (16) was their next best scorer.

Veteran allrounder Mehboob Alam took 3-10 from four overs for PC Fighter. Dhiraj Shahi and Basanta Khatri also had two scalps apiece. PC Fighter were once reduced to 50-4 but Naresh shared 67 runs for the fifth wicket with Rabin Joshi (30) to resurrect the innings.

Trimurty Boys struck with quick dismissals of Rabin and Prakash Chand Thakuri (four) but Naresh and Subash Khakurel stitched an unbroken 60-run stand as PC Fighter strengthened their position.

Naresh was unbeaten on 75 off 50 balls with eight fours and four sixes. Subash smashed a 21-ball 40 not out hitting four boundaries and two sixes. Sandeep Tamang took three wickets for Trimurty Boys.
