Nepal's leg spinner Sandeep makes IPL history

Jan 28, 2018 | Cricketingnepal |
Nepal's Sandeep Lamichhane has become the first cricketer from the tiny Himalayan country to find a place in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
In the auction for the 11th edition of the most viewed Twenty20 cricket league of the world, Delhi Daredevils bought the young leg spinning sensation Sandeep for a base price of INR 200,000.

Sandeep was called in the acceleration process where the registered players were directly picked following proposals from the franchises. Sandeep will now play alongside some of the greats of the game that will include Chris Morris, Glenn Maxwell, Gautam Gambhir, Jason Roy, Colin Munro and Trent Boult.

Sandeep's buy in the IPL is a complete turnaround for the 17-year old guy from Chitwan who was not even in the cricketing scene when Nepal played the ICC U-19 Global Qualifiers in Malaysia in 2015.

Found from the talent hunt by coach Pubudu Dassanayake, he managed to find a place in the 2016 ICC U-19 World Cup in Dhaka where he was dubbed the Shane Warne of Nepal. He was a global hit during the U-19 World Cup and was followed by numerous global media, including the BBC.

Sandeep then found a place in the national team with the ICC World Cricket League Championship (WCLC) home matches against Namibia from where he has never looked back.

He managed to play alongside Michael Clarke for the Kowloon Cantons in the Hong Kong Twenty20 Blitz. Impressed by Sandeep's bowling prowess, Clarke sponsored Sandeep's tour to Australia to train at Michael Clarke Cricket Academy and also helped him feature in few Grade A cricket matches.

Sandeep's pick in the IPL could be attributed to Clarke who had recently tweeted: "Brilliant to see mate, if I was apart of a team I would pick him up quick smart. Wonderful talent and little champion" soon after Sandeep was named in the IPL auction.

Another Australian legend Ricky Ponting is the coach of the Delhi Daredevils side. After Sandeep was sold to Delhi Daredevils, Nepalese have gone crazy in their social media accounts hailing Sandeep as a great bowler and thanking Delhi Daredevils.
