Nepali cricket in turmoil

May 20, 2014 | Eddie Van Brooks |

The crisis in the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) that stemmed through its association with the Ncell Nepal Premier League (NPL) has deepened further after one fraction prepared in the ouster of its president Tanka Aangubhang.

Alleging the president of running the association solely and publicly promoting NPL despite a majority of members deciding to pull out the ownership from it, the faction that consisted of 15 members including senior vice-president TB Shaha, vice-presidents Chatur Bahadur Chand, Bikash Ghimire and Srinivas Rana said it will call on a special general assembly to throw out Aangbuhang.

"The majority of members have agreed that the president is running cricket as a dictator and it is now intolerable. We tried to convince him until the last hour not to promote NPL but he not only inaugurated the tournament but also called it a CAN-organized event," said Chand during a press meet on Tuesday.

The current statute of the cricket governing body has no provision of ousting a elected president through a minuting from majority of members but Chand said: “We have to take a legal approach. We can bring a vote of no confidence and for that a two-third majority is available from 36 districts and nine regions.”

Just a day ahead of NPL’s commencement on May 14, CAN issued a press release announcing its withdrawal from NPL. A majority of members in the governing council, formed for the smooth functioning of the NPL, decided to quit alleging NPL organizers ZSM to have broken agreement of providing financial dealings with sponsors.

However, Aangbuhang had inaugurated the tournament calling the withdrawal decision as unofficial and against the development of cricket. Aangbuhang gave an open challenge to remove him.

“Calling a press conference doesn’t prove anything. Everything has to go under process and if someone wants to remove me, then I challenge them to do it,” Aangbuhang told cricketingnepal.com. The President said he will work ahead to punish all those involved in Tuesday’s announcement.

The separate fraction’s withdrawal from NPL’s ownership itself is huge question as they have overturned a decision that has been made by the board. During the press conference on Tuesday, CAN General Secretary Ashok Nath Pyakurel remain mum when he was asked about the decision.
