Sanima gives Lamichhane sports scholarship

Jul 08, 2016 | Eddie Van Brooks |

Nepal's leg spinning young star Sandeep Lamichhane has been provided with sports scholarship by Sanima Bank Limited on Friday .

The bank and Sandeep signed an agreement which will see the 16-year old national team member getting Rs 20,000 every month. Sanima has called it a sports scholarship.

"We want every player to focus solely on game without looking for options to earn for living. And tying up with Sandeep is just an initiation from us,"said Sanima CEO Bhuwan Dahal during the programme. "We hope that other corporate houses also come forward to look after other players."

The deal between Sandeep and Sanima was done following an initiation from Cricket Players' Association of Nepal (CPAN) which recently initiated in sending national team batsman Naresh Budhayer to Canada and rookie left arm spinner Sushan Bhari Shrestha to England.

CPAN President and former national team skipper Pawan Agrawal said CPAN has bigger ambitions. "We are trying to establish an environment where players could only focus on game and things beside sports are laid for them," said Agrawal. "We are also looking forward to get similar contract for other players."

The agreement also sees Sandeep promoting Sanima in their promotional campaign but CEO Dahal said he will used in very least programmes. Sandeep said the agreement was an inspiration for him.

"This will inspire me to do even better on the field. I hope other players will also get this opportunity," said Sandeep who earned a global recognition  through the U-19 World Cup after he was likened to Australian legendary leg spinner Shane Warne by many international media.

He had ended the U-19 World Cup as second highest leading wicket taker with 14 wickets including a hat-trick against Ireland in a five-wicket haul. His fine performance in the U-19 World Cup also earned him a place in the national team squad for the ICC World Cricket League Championship matches against Namibia held in Kathmandu on  April 16 and 18
