The bell tolls for Anil Mandal

Mar 16, 2015 | Eddie Van Brooks |

Anil Mandal gave selectors a lot to think about smashing second century in the Senior One Day National Cricket Tournament in a crushing 145-run victory over Region-II (Birgunj) at the Pulchowk Engineering College grounds on Monday.

Anil, who has been out of the national team after the 2014 ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers held in January in New Zealand, sent a ringing bell to the team management becoming the first batsman to score three centuries in national cricket.

At a time when regular opener Naresh Budhayer has underperformed, particularly after Division-II in Namibia, Anil has sneaked into the contention for World Cricket League Championship matches.

Anil was heavily tipped as the best opener for national cricket team after he slammed century against Demark during a Division-IV match in Malaysia in 2012 and followed the fine performance forging big partnerships with Subash Khakurel during the 2012 ACC Trophy Elite.

However, his form dipped after the Division-III tournament in Bermuda and that continued even during the World Cup Qualifiers in New Zealand.

Having already lost the faith in selectors and the team management itself, Anil's future was uncertain but he has once again spoken with the volumes that could see his return in the national fold.

On Monday, Anil became the only batsman to score three centuries in Nationals leaving behind the achievement from Paresh Lohani, Raju Khadka and Amit Shrestha. He also emulated Amit in slamming two centuries in a single tournament.

Since the Nationals will be followed by a league of selection matches between the four best teams compiled out of the top players from the current tournament, Anil will get ample opportunities what he has to serve in the national team.
