Anuradha half century stuns Biratnagar

Defending champions Region No 1 (Biratnagar) got their Wai Wai U-19 National Women’s Twenty20 Tournament title defence to a disastrous start losing their opener to Region No 7 (Janakpur) by nine runs at the Tribhuvan University Stadium.

 

Anuradha Chaudhary slammed an unbeaten half century taking one-time champion Janakpur to 126 in 20 overs. Biratnagar were right in the chase but fell terribly short finishing their innings at 117-5 in 20 overs.

 

Opener Kajol Shrestha scored 25 runs with three boundaries as the top three Biratnagar batswomen took Biratnagar to 53-3 in 13.1 overs. Sangeet Rai and Geeta Prasai then shared 40 run stand for the fourth wicket to keep Biratnagar in the game.

 

But a run out of Sangeeta meant an end of Biratnagar innings. Sangeeta made a run-a-ball 31 with two hits to the fence, while Geeta was unbeaten on 24 off 18 with two boundaries. Roma Thapa made 12 off eight.

 

Mamta Chaudhary and Shanti Chaudhary picked up a wicket each for Janakpur with Biratnagar innings reading three run outs. Earlier, Anuradha shared two big partnership handing Janakpur a challenging total and her innings made the difference.

 

Anuradha began with a 51-run stand for the first wicket with Shanti (14) and shared 75-run unbeaten partnership for the second with Mamta. Anuradha hit seven boundaries in her 53-ball 55, while Mamta hit tournament’s first six and stroked two fours in her 27 off 32.

Neha Karki took the only Janakpur wicket to fall.
