Anil, Paras lead Warriors to first victory

Biratnagar Warriors registered victory in their opening match of the TVS Everest Premier League Twenty20 cricket tournament defeating Gyanendra Malla’s Lalitpur Patriots by six runs on Tuesday.
National team skipper Paras Khadka-led Warriors made 151-6 in 20 overs with their captain and Anil Sah leading the charge with the bat. Patriots could only muster 144-4 in 20 overs.
Patriots’ chase was jolted after they lost two big wickets of opener Jaykishan Kolsawala (12) and skipper Gyanendra (one) in a space of one run. Pawan Sarraf and Yogesh Nagar then leased life in Patriots’ innings adding 75 runs for the third wicket.
Nagar made 27 from 31 balls with three fours before he was bowled by spinning ball from Paras. Sarraf, who rode luck almost throughout his innings, reached his half century with a boundary off Anshuman Rath, made 51 from 47.
He hit six boundaries and a six before losing his wicket to Rath soon after becoming EPL’s first Nepali batsman to reach half century. Patriots needed 45 runs to win from the last five overs after the dismissal of Pawan but Warriors bowlers held firm to open their account with victory.
Patriots collected 13 runs in the 19th over and needed 19 runs to win from the last over but Karan KC effectively bowled to snatch the victory. He conceded 12 runs from the 20th over.
Kushal Bhurtel made 20 from 19 with a six and four and Mehboob Alam scored 13 off 14 with a six. The two combined for a 38-run unbroken stand for the fifth wicket in 30 deliveries.
Earlier, Warriors lost their opener Aasif Sheikh (four) to Patriots’ Indian recruit Subodh Bhati before a 32-run partnership between Hong Kong duo of Babar Hayat and Anshuman Rath (14) consolidated the innings.
Hayat was looking in good touch hitting leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane for a six and five boundaries. But Lamichhane had his revenge as he removed Hayat trapping leg before. Hayat made 34 from 25 balls with his dismissal leaving Warriors at 68-3 in nine overs.
Anil and Paras then resurrected the Warriors innings with a 80-run partnership that guided their team towards an imposing total. Anil top scored for the team with a 35-ball 47. He hit three sixes and two boundaries. Paras scored 38 from 36 balls with two sixes.
Sandeep was the pick of the Patriots bowlers taking 2-29 from four overs. Bhati and Nagar took a wicket each.
