All round Shanti stuns Bhairahawa

Region No 4 (Bhairahawa) had done nothing wrong in the league stages. They won all four Group ‘B’ matches to finish pool winners and everyone was contributing for them. But one bad day that came at a wrong point of the tournament, they threw away a solid chance to win first ever national level title.

One time champion Region No 7 (Janakpur) on Thursday knocked Bhairahawa out of the Wai Wai U-19 Women’s National Twenty20 Cricket Tournament with a 29-run victory at the Tribhuvan University Stadium.

Opener Shanti Chaudhary was the player of the day who batted brilliantly leading her team to 115-4 in 20 overs and picked up two wickets restricting Bhairahawa to 86-9.

In a sorry looking Bhairahawa score card, skipper Indu Barma tried to bring them back with a 45-run partnership with Ashna Thapa but after her dismissal, the fight ended for them. Indu made 23 off 28 with three hits to the fence and Ashna scored 11 off 24 with one boundary.

Apart from Shanti, Anuradha Chaudhary, Aarati Chaudhary, Mamta Chaudhary and Saraswati Chaudhary also picked up a wicket each for Janakpur who conceded 24 extra runs.

Earlier, Janakpur – who finished runners-up to Region No 1 (Biratnagar) in Group ‘A’ – lost opener Anuradha (five) early in the game but Shanti forged a match-winning second wicket stand of 71 runs with Mamta that ultimately proved to be the difference in the game.

Mamta made 35 off 28 with four boundaries and after her departure Shanti handled the game sensitively playing an unbeaten knock. She made 42 off 53 with three fours. Prabina Khadka picked up two wickets, while Sima Thapa and Indu snapped one each.

Janakpur will now meet Biratnagar in the final. Biratnagar earlier defeated Region No 6 (Baitadi) by 59 runs in the first semi-final.
