Afghans stun mighty Indians, UAE shock Bangladesh

Afghanistan stunned India U-23 by 28 runs but still missed out of a place in the semi-finals on a day of suprises where the United Arab Emirates shocked Bangladesh U-23 by 59 runs to make it to the last four of the ACC Emerging Teams Cup.

Despite a descent 53-run opening stand from Karim Sadiq and Mohammad Shahzad, Afghanistan only managed 184-7 in 50 overs but did brilliantly well to restrict their opponents for 156-9 in their 50. UAE, meanwhile, rode high on a century from Shaiman Anwar to make 202-8 and Nasir Aziz’s five-wicket haul saw Bangladesh restricted to 143 all out in 41 overs.

The day, however, belonged to Afghanistan whose bowlers marked a memorable tournament that ened with the surprise scalp of the mighty Indians. The Afghan bowlers won a lost match against Nepal and almost sealed an unlikely victory over Pakistan in defense of their 142 runs and the hard work paid off for them against India.

Shahzad made 38 and Sadiq scored 25 as Afghanistan got off to a decent start adding 53 runs in 20.2 overs. However, Indian bowlers managed to tighten the screw until Samiulla Shenwari’s 44-ball 43 took the Afghans to a respectable position.

Only Lokesh Rahul (51) and Ankit Bawne (39) managed to put some runs on the board after Mohammad Nabi (3-32) and Rahmat Shah (2-40) shared five wickets between them. Mirwais Ashraf, Izatullah Dawlatzai and Hamza Hotal bowled very tight spell for the Afghans.

India topped Group ‘A’ and will now meet the Group ‘B’ runners-up UAE in the semi-finals. The other semi-final pits Group ‘B’ winners Sri Lanka U-23 and Group ‘A’ runners-up Pakisan U-23.

At the Padang, Anwar stroked his second century of the tournament making exactly 100 runs to give UAE a solid score in a difficult batting track. Noor Hossain took three wickets for Bangladesh — who were undone by Aziz’s 5-17 from seven overs.

Ahmed Raza also picked up three crucial wickets for the UAE. Maisuqur Rahim (34) and Soumya Sarkar (30) were the only Bangaldesh batsmen to impress in the match.
