Cabinet endorses Dassanayake’s contract

Jul 18, 2014 | Eddie Van Brooks |

A cabinet meeting on Friday has endorsed the ministry level decision of handing national cricket team coach Pubudu Dassanayake a one-year contract extension.

Youth and Sports Minister Purushottam Paudel said the cabinet has endorse the budget that has been prepared for Dassanayake’s one-year stay in Nepal. “Since the current budget did not mention the amount needed for Dassanayake’s stay, the cabinet decided to endorse it today,” Paudel told cricketingnepal.com.

Government had intervened to hand Dassanayake the one-year extension after the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) decided not to retain him citing budget crunches. The CAN decision had invited a series of fury in public in the support of coach who has guided Nepal to several international titles including their maiden appearance in the ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh this year.

After the frustration from public, government stepped in and decided to give him an extension. “It now becomes the responsibility of the government to look after Dassanayake if CAN fails to do so. Until CAN gets the amount from international governing bodies, government will look after Dassanayake,” said Paudel.

The minister also informed that Dassanayake will be sent a formal appointment letter through mail by Sunday. CAN is currently bankrupted due to a massive corruption which has seen the officials embezzle millions of rupees that has been collected from national and international resources.

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority has file graft charges against 10 CAN officials embezzling millions in the construction of Mulpani cricket stadium.
