Leg spinner Sandeep walks way with Man-of-the-Series award

Jul 25, 2017 | Safal Regmi |

Nepal’s skipper and leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane marked a memorable outing in Singapore despite his side failing to qualify for next year’s World Cup in New Zealand after finishing runners-up behind qualifiers Afghanistan on Tuesday.

Nepal, who lost both their matches to Afghanistan, ended up earning eight points in the table, while Afghanistan qualified with a 100 per cent victory in all their six matches for 12 points. While Afghanistan escalated, Nepal faltered – mainly due to their batting frailties.

However there has been a brighter side as Sandeep finished the tournament picking up 24 wickets and walked away with the man-of-the-series award. The teen sensation, who had the figures of 7-13 against Malaysia on Monday, bowled 53.4 overs conceding 130 runs at an economy rate of 2.42.

Sandeep had a total of three five-wicket hauls in the tournament and kept eight maidens. Another Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Zadran trailed Sandeep by four wickets and behind him was his teammate Yousuf Zazai with 18 wickets.

Nepal’s newly discovered spinner Shahab Alam is fourth in the leading wicket taking bowler of the tournament with 12 victims. Afghan opener Ibrahim Zadran, who smashed a century against Nepal in Tuesday’s 96-run win, finished the leading scorer with 218 runs.

Nepal all rounder Dipendra Singh Airee was seventh in the batting list with 131 runs.
