Jul 25, 2017 | Eddie Van Brooks |

Nepal’s terrible display with the bat in the ICC U-19 World Cup Division 1 Qualifier for Asia Region wrapped up after Afghanistan completed the formality by winning the final match of the second leg by 96 runs to qualify for next year’s U-19 World Cup in New Zealand.

In a match where Nepal needed a victory with biggest of margin, Afghanistan rode on a back of a century from Ibrahim Zadran to score 195 all out in 46.5 overs. Nepal, in reply, were 99 all out –their highest score in the tournament – in 40.3 overs.

Afghanistan qualified with an uneaten campaign notching up 12 points from six games. Nepal, who had lost to Afghans by 141 runs in the first leg, ended up second with eight points.

Dipendra Singh Airee was the lone fighter for Nepal scoring 48 from 81 balls with seven boundaries and a six. Spinners Mujeeb Zadran and Yousuf Zazai picked up two wickets each in the top order as Nepal were reduced to 34-5 in no time.

Dipendra saved Nepal from another humiliation adding 51 runs for the sixth wicket with Pawan Sarraf (10) before losing his wicket in the 35thover. His exit was end of the Nepali innings as they only added 14 runs for the loss of three wickets. Prakash KC (10) was the remaining batsman to make runs in double figures.

Zazai (4-11) and Mujeeb (3-26) shared seven wickets between them for Afghanistan.

Afghansitan innings was built around Ibrahim’s century who was dismissed in the 41st over and thereafter Nepali bowlers contained the opponents. Ibrahim made 101 off 114 balls with seven boundaries and five sixes, while Naveed Obaid (22) and Ikram Faizi (24) were other batsman with notable scores.

Shahab Alam picked up 4-30 from 8.5 overs and Dipendra gave an all-round show taking 3-41 from 10 overs.
