Nepal left with an improbable task of turning fortunes

Jul 20, 2017 | Eddie Van Brooks |

Nepal were left with an improbable task of turning around their fortunes in the ICC U-19 World Cup Division 1 Asia Qualifier crashing to a massive 141-run defeat to Afghanistan in Singapore on Thursday.

After two hard-fought victories against Singapore and Malaysia, Nepal needed to defeat Afghanistan to gain an edge over their South Asian arch rivals, but another poor batting display has put them on a course of being knocked out from the 2018 U-19 World Cup contention.

Nepal now must win all their second round matches with huge victories but with a batting that is yet to impress, it looks improbable for them.

Skipper and fast bowler Naveen-UL-Haq was the chief tormentor in Nepal’s chase after they restricted the Afghans to 190 all out in 49.4 overs. Naveen picked up four wickets in a burst of the opening spell including a hat-trick as Nepal were bundled out for 49 runs in 26 overs.

After off spinner Mujeeb Zadra got rid of the openers Aasif Sheikh (six) and Sandeep Sunar (two), Naveen came in the eighth over picking up the wickets of Dipendra Singh Airee (four), Pranit Thapa Magar (duck) and Anil Sah (duck) in successive balls to throw Nepal out of the contest.

He returned again in the 10th over to remove Aadil Khan as it was all left in saving the blushes of the Nepali side. Pawan Sarraf put some fight making a 52-ball 26 with four boundaries becoming Nepal’s only bowler to make runs in double figures.

Man-of-the-match Naveen took 4-8 from four overs and Zadran snared 4-7 from nine overs with an economy rate of 0.77. Four Nepali batsmen failed to open their account.

Earlier, Naveed Obaid and Ibrahim Zadran gave Afghanistan a perfect start with a 75-run partnership for the first wicket. Nepali bowlers managed to contain the Afghans after that stand but they managed to reach close to 200.

Ibrahim top scored with a 41-ball 43 and Obain scored 33 from 56 balls. Tariq Stankizai chipped in 27 off 57. Shahab Alam took 3-46 from 10 overs, while Sandeep Lamichhane (2-30) and Pawan (2-19) were also amongst the wickets.
