Most expensive overs in domestic cricket

May 29, 2017 | Eddie Van Brooks |

The 2012 U-19 World Cup cricketer Saurav Khanal almost did the unthinkable blitzing with a 49-ball 90  not out in Western Region’s Prime Minister Cup One Day National cricket tournament Group ‘A’ match against Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club. Saurav’s innings though couldn’t save Western from a 16-run defeat, it provided a much-needed excitement to the tournament that is yet to see 200 runs on the board.

On his way to hitting tournament’s highest score so far, Saurav has turned back the clock to remember some of the expensive overs in the country’s domestic cricket. Here we look at the top three expensive overs of domestic cricket

32 RUNS: In the seventh National Games cricket matches, Binod Bhandari blitzed in Biratnagar against Western Region in a group stage match scoring 32 runs. Bhandari alone hit five sixes in the over against Lalit Pyakurel who was boosted with a wicket in the first ball of his over. Lalit went on to concede a wide next ball before Bhandari hit a six off the bowler. Lalit conceded another wide before Bhandari smashed four consecutive sixes making it a 32-run over.

31 RUNS: In the Birendra Memorial National cricket tournament in Birgunj, Raju Khadka hit Birgunj bowler Sanjam Regmi for 31 runs which stays as the highest run hit by a single batsman in domestic cricket history. Bhairahawa captain Khadka hit sixes in the five consecutive balls before taking a single in the last ball.

30 RUNS: Avinash Bohora of Nepal APF Club became the third expensive bowler in the domestic cricket history conceding 30 runs in the league match of the ongoing Prime Minister Cup. In a match when Western Region needed 57 runs from the last 12 balls, Saurav smashed three consecutive sixes before playing a dot in the fourth. The fifth and sixth balls also went for a six.
