Nepal's World T20 Qualifiers in numbers

Having already played two editions of the World Twenty20 Qualifiers. Nepal will target to replicate their performance of the last edition in UAE from where they made it to the ICC World Twenty20. They will begin their Qualifiers campaign with the match against the United States of America on Friday. But before grooving with the music that the competitive fixtures in Ireland and Scotland will offer all the

 

Nepali cricket lovers, here we are bringing you the stats from the previous Qualifiers in numbers:

 

19 Total number of matches. Nepal have so far won 11 of the total number matches they have played in the Qualifiers so far. Their best finish came in the second edition where they finished third playing 10 matches overall. Out of the nine matches Nepal played in 2012, they had won five and lost four, while they triumphed in six matches in 2013 edition.

 

486 Leading individual score for Nepal in the two Qualifiers with skipper Paras Khadka holding this record. Paras has not missed a single match of the Qualifiers, playing 19 games and batting in 18 innings. Paras' deputy Gyanendra Malla is in the second position with 294 runs in 18 innings from 19 matches.

 

25 Left-arm spinner Basanta Regmi holds the record of picking up highest number of wickets in the Qualifiers. Basanta has taken 25 wickets conceding 428 runs in 69.2 overs with one maiden. Veteran left arm spinner Shakti Gauchan has 19 wickets and is in the second position. Gauchan has also bowled 69.2 overs -- a coincidence??

 

5 Shakti has the highest number of maiden overs in the Qualifiers. Basanta is second in the list with one maiden. No other Nepali bowler has bowled a maiden in the World Twenty20 Qualifiers.

 

35 A record of maximum number of boundaries hit by a Nepali batsman. Paras Khadka holds this record having batted in 18 innings. Gyanendra shares the second spot with opening batsman and wicketkeeper Subash Khakurel. The duo, who recently opened the innings for Nepal in few matches in build up to the current Qualifiers, have 22 boundaries.

 

8 Maximum number of boundaries by an individual. Paras Khadka is once again the record holder.  Paras sent eight balls out of the boundary rope during the match against Bermuda in the 2012 World Twenty20 Qualifiers that was also held in UAE. Paras ended up making 65 not out from 48 balls in the match. Paras is also in the second position along with Pradeep Airee afer hitting seven boundaries. While Paras' feat came against Hong Kong in 2012, Airee had smashed Denmark in the same edition.

 

6 Most sixes in an innings by a batsman. Explosive batsman Binod Bhandari leads this this list with six sixes. Bhandari had smashed Papua New Guinea bowlers for six sixes in the 2013 edition. Paras is in the second position with five sixers which he scored against Denmark during the 2013 edition.

 

14 Maximum sixes in two Qualifiers. Its Paras once again. Paras hit three sixes in the 2013 Qualifiers but he returned as even aggressive batsman in the next edition clobbering 11 sixes. Hard hitter Binod Bhandari is in the second position with 10 sixes. Only 11 players have listed their name for hitting sixers in the Qualifiers so far.

 

2 Half centuries in debut. Only two batsmen have scored half centuries for Nepal in their debut match of the Qualifiers. Captain Paras became the first batsman to hit a half century in Qualifiers which he did against Hong Kong in 2012 scoring 68 runs. Anil Mandal is the other unlikely batsman making 50 against Afghanistan, also in 2012.

 

68 Best individual score. A reality check for Nepali batsmen. Nepal have so far played 19 matches in the two Qualifiers but not a single batsman has managed to touch 70 runs. Paras has the highest score for Nepal in an innings which came against Hong Kong in 2012 edition. Once a hard hitting opener, Pradeep Airee, has the second best individual total of 65 runs. Pradeep had the score against Denmark in 2012Paras is also third in the list with 65 runs against Bermuda in the same edition.

 

4 Maximum half centuries from a batsman. Yet another record for Paras. Nepal so far have registered eight half centuries in the Qualifiers and Paras has brought half of them. Pradeep Airee, Subash Khakurel, Binod Bhandari and Anil Mandal are other Nepali batsmen to have made half centuries in the Qualifiers.

 

4-16 Best bowling figures. Basnata holds the record of best bowling figures for Nepal in the Qualifiers. Basanta achieved the feat against the UAE in the third place playoff match of the 2013 Qualifiers. It was the edition where Nepal finished third in the tournament soon after confirming their place in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20. Shakti has the next best bowling figures with 4-20 against Denmark during 2012 edition, while Chandra Sawad (4-24 against Hong Kong in 2012) is in the third spot.

 

16 Most wickets in a single Qualifiers. Shakti holds the record which he did during he 2012 edition. Basant is second in the list with 14 wickets in the 2013 edition. Basanta had taken 11 wickets in 2012, the same number of wickets taken by Chandra (2012), Paras (2013) and Jitendra Mukhiya (2013) sharing the third spot.

 

77 Highest partnership. Subash and Gyanendra hold the record of best partnership for Nepal in the Qualifiers. The duo shared 77-run parntership from 56 balls for the second wicket against Kenya during the 2013 edition. Sharad Vesawkar and Mehboob Alam have the second best partnership of 75 off 62 that came against Bermuda during the 2012 edition.  Subash was also involved in another big partnership after sharing 67 runs with Paras against Denmark in 2013.

 

73-3 Lowest score for Nepal in qualifiers. Although it was a rain shortened match, it will go as Nepal's lowest total in Qualifiers. Nepal had made 73-3 against Afghanistan in a league stage game in 2013 that was reduced to seven-over-a-side. Nepal’s second lowest score came against Canada in 2012 after they were bundled out for just 83 in 18.2 overs. The third lowest total of 85-7 came against the Netherlands in 2012 edition, while they also crashed to 90-8 against Afghanistan in the 2013 semi-finals.

 

186 Biggest chase. Nepal's best finish in the Qualifiers came in the 2013 edition when they overhauled Kenya's 182 with an entertaining 186-4 in 19.4 overs. It was their second match of the tournament. Nepal required 17 runs of the last over and Sharad Vesawkar did the job for Nepal smashing three sixes. Sharad had scored 23 off six. Nepal’s second best chase came against Hong Kong during the 2013 qualifiers. In a playoff game that guaranteed Nepal a spot in the ICC World Twenty20, Nepal replied with 144 in the last ball of the game with Sharad once agian at the centre of the victory.

 

1 Veteran left arm spinner Shakti Gauchan is the one and only Nepali bowler to take hat-trick in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers. Shakti achieved the feat against Denmark during ICC T20 World Cup Qualifiers in 2012 which also made him the only Nepali bowler to take hat-trick in senior international cricket.
