Sunil Gavaskars in Women's National

Feb 12, 2015 | Eddie Van Brooks |

India's legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar has often been hailed for his aggressive approach in cricket. But the same batsman is also remembered for one of the slowest innings in the world cricket. Gavaskar has never opened up about the innings till date just shrugging off the talks with a laugh.

In the 1975 World Cup match against England at the mecca of cricket in Lord's, Gavaskar opened India's reply of England's 334-4 in 60 overs and faced 174-ball on his way to make 36 not out. He scored one boundary in his slowest of the innings. India finished their innings at 132-3 when one-day cricket used to be of 60 overs.

Now can you beat that?

Yes that's beatable in Nepal.

Nepali bats-women from Pokhara have given their all to imitate the legendary Gavaskar in one of their Women's National match against Pokhara on Thursday. The day will be remembered as one of the slowest scoring innings in the Nepali domestic cricket history. We are ignoring the past stats that Nepali cricket might not have.

In their match against defending champions Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club, Pokhara played all their 40 overs making just 48 runs and most surprisingly lost only four wickets. Even surprising was they had elected to bat first.

If India had Gavaskar then Pokhara's Gavaskar was their opener Trishna Devkota who faced 96 balls batting till the 31st before making just nine runs. Oh! That was slowest than how Gavaskar fared. But Pokhara wouldn't stop here. They had three Gavaskars for the day.

Shila Regmi was close to beat opener Devkota but she was unfortunately out for seven off 75 and another opener Dikshya Baral scored four off 47.

Hmm so Pokhara is not only famous for the lakes and caves.

Pokhara's sluggish innings was gift for APF bowlers who put 16 maiden overs throughout the match and Rubina Chhetri was their top performer picking up 2-6 from eight overs.

If the stats from Pokhara innings were interesting to read, we have a soft corner for those who witnessed it. The knife was on the edge but it never slaughtered. And APF finally came up with the relief much to the delight of those frustrated, reaching the total in just 32 deliveries losing one wicket.
